We mourn the loss of a valued colleague who has shaped and supported the Institute since its beginnings. We will keep him in honorable memory.

Academic career and public offices

From 1951, Hans Buchheim was a research assistant at the Institute for Contemporary History in Munich, where he worked primarily on the ruling organizations of National Socialism. From the mid-1950s, he was also involved as an expert witness in various trials of Nazi criminals. He later worked on Adenauer’s foreign and German policy. In 1966, Hans Buchheim was appointed full professor at the former Faculty of Philosophy at JGU. Here he was instrumental in founding and establishing the Institute of Political Science and the Department of Social Sciences (now Social Sciences, Media and Sport), of which he was Dean.

Beyond academia, Buchheim held a number of public offices and responsibilities, including in the CDU, on the Central Committee of German Catholics and as an advisor to the Federal Chancellery. He remained closely associated with his institute long after his retirement (1990) and regularly offered lectures until his 90th birthday.

Main research areas

Hans Buchheim studied classical philology, ancient history and philosophy, but already dealt with political problems of antiquity in his dissertation (“Die Orientpolitik des Marcus Antonius und sein Verhältnis zu Octavian”). His research initially focused primarily on contemporary (German) history, where he dealt with the era of National Socialism and later with the immediate post-war period. He also had a keen interest in normative and conceptual issues as well as the classics of the history of ideas.

Selected publications

The Third Reich.
