Inhalt

This Course lies at the intersection of political economy, comparative politics, and the study of populist political attitudes.
It investigates the interplay between Globalization (and Europeanization), the evolution of the Welfare State, and the increasing appeal and success of populist and radical political actors.
In the course of the Seminar, we explore the tension between National Sovereignty (and Social Cohesion), Economic (and Political) Globalization, and Liberal Democracy, and the way in which this tension expresses itself across various polities.
Populist and radical political actors(and parties) of various ideologies have been registering increasing electoral success and public support across diverse constituencies and political settings.
This evolution, and the changing landscape of party politics and political attitudes (shifting cleavages, polarization, discontent with democracy) are plotted against the backdrop of evolving socio-political conditions of Western societies such as social and economic changes (growing inequality, the fallout of the financial crisis, industrial deskilling, social exclusion) and political/institutional factors(the cartelization of mainstream politics, European Integration, the varying structures of national welfare systems and political economy).
