Inhalt

This course lies at the intersection of political economy, comparative politics, and the study of populist political attitudes. In the course of the Seminar, we explore the tension between Liberal Democracy, Globalization, National Politics and Social Cohesion, and the way in which this tension expresses itself across various political systems in the form of populist politics. It investigates the interplay between Globalization (and Europeanization), the evolution of the Welfare State, and the increasing appeal and success of populist and radical political actors.
The evolution of populism, and the changing landscape of party politics and political attitudes (shifting cleavages, polarization, discontent with democracy) are explored in relation to socio-political developments in Western societies such as social and economic changes (growing inequality, the fallout of the financial crisis, industrial deskilling, social exclusion) and political/institutional factors(the cartelization of mainstream politics, European Integration, the varying structures of national welfare systems and political economy).

-          The Course begins with a review of perspectives over political economy, the politics of the welfare state, and the evolution of social and political cleavages in modern societies.
-          It then proceeds to discussing, defining, and conceptualizing populism: what is it, what characterizes it, how can it be measured? We also discuss various perspectives and schools of thought on populism in this stage of the seminar, and explore the various sub-types of populisms that can be identified, as well as variations in populism (populist behavior, populist attitudes) across the world.
-          The seminar then explores and discusses different explanations for the increasing appeal of populism in various political systems.
-          In the next part of the course, these explanations are tied back to the topics discussed in the beginning of the seminar: the way in which populist thought interacts with social and political cleavages, with political economy and political culture in various settings.
-          In the final stage of the course we will connect all the topics discussed so far to the issue of how populism affects the tension between Liberal Democracy, Globalization, National Politics and Social Cohesion

Each week students will have to read one research article/essay on the topic of the respective seminar session, and be prepared to discuss that piece of literature in light of the themes presented in the seminar.
